The Limits of Obedience to the Leader and Ruler in the Light of Sharia

A scientific seminar titled “The Limits of Obedience to the Leader and Ruler in the Light of Sharia” was held in the conference hall with the participation of professors and academic members.

The seminar opened with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Ustad Abdul Zahir Safi. Afterwards, Dr. Misbahullah Abdulbaqi explained the main topic of the seminar: the importance and necessity of a governing system in human society, obedience to the leader/ruler, and its conditions.

During the seminar, Dr. Misbahullah Abdulbaqi elaborated on the following important and fundamental points:

  1. Human beings are naturally social and require cooperation and collaboration with others to fulfill their material and spiritual needs.

  2. No society can achieve lasting stability and progress without order and leadership.

  3. The existence of a just and organized system is essential to prevent chaos and ensure social justice.

Obedience to the Leader: Absolute or Conditional?
A significant section of the seminar focused on examining the limits of obedience to the leader (Amir). The key points of this part were:

  • Obedience to the leader is a fundamental principle in Islam; however, this obedience is not absolute.

  • Obedience is only obligatory in matters that are good and permissible according to Sharia, reason, and public interest.

  • Based on the well-known hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him):
“There is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to the Creator.”

  • Considering public interest is one of the essential conditions for obedience.

The seminar concluded with a closing prayer led by Ustad Hesbanullah Mutawakkil, Head of the Islamic Culture Department.
