On Saturday, December 1, 2024, a academic seminar titled "The 11th to 22nd November 2024 Global Climate Change Conference: Commitments, Challenges, and Consequences for Afghanistan" was held in the conference hall of Salam University, initiated by the Research Center.
In this seminar, professors and students from Salam University, mostly from the Faculty of Engineering, participated. Additionally, guests from the Center for Strategic and Regional Studies, the Tahdhib Educational Institute, and Wathiq Pharma Company also attended the event. The program began with an introduction by Mohammad Tariq Siyar, Executive Director of the Salam University Research Center, followed by a beautiful recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by one of the students.
The topic of the seminar and the guest speaker were then introduced by the Head of the Research Center. The main speaker of the seminar, Mr. Hayat Wahdat, a participant of the Baku Conference and Chairman of the Board of ORD Afghanistan, presented a comprehensive presentation on the history and formation of COP (Conference of the Parties) and its focus on environmental issues. He shed light on the agenda and discussions of the recent conference held in Baku, Azerbaijan, with over 70,000 participants. Mr. Wahdat discussed the dangerous environmental problems affecting Afghanistan and other developing, non-industrial countries, due to the actions of industrial and powerful nations. He called on young people to understand their world better and prepare themselves for the future challenges ahead.
He also suggested to the leadership of universities and the Ministry of Higher Education to update the environmental studies curriculum in line with the demands of the new era of modernization. He emphasized the need for training specialists in non-fossil and renewable energy sectors, stating that if we fail to train such professionals today, it will be too late tomorrow. He pointed out that, due to the prolonged wars in Afghanistan, the country has lagged at least 50 years behind the rest of the world.
In the second part of the seminar, faculty members and students from the Faculty of Engineering raised interesting questions, which were answered patiently by the guest speaker.
At the end of the program, Dr. Misbahullah Abdulbaqi, President of Salam University, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the guest and participants. He added that Allah, in His creation of the earth and heavens, has made all things available to humanity and emphasized the lawful use of divine blessings on Earth.
He noted that modern human civilization is in conflict with nature, and due to the irresponsible use of earthly resources, widespread corruption has been caused. If this issue is not addressed, both the wet and dry aspects of the world will suffer, and everyone will endure the consequences. He advised the students to understand and correctly transmit the message of Islamic civilization in all aspects, including the responsible and respectful use of the environment, to the world. According to him, our world is in need of a new global system based on the balanced and just guidance of Islam.
