Progress and Backwardness of Societies and Civilizations in the Light of the Holy Qur’an

Abstract

This article examines the factors of progress and backwardness of societies and civilizations in light of the Holy Quran. The study shows that faith, knowledge, justice, adherence to cosmic and social laws, cooperation and solidarity, ethical values, a suitable environment and economic resources, and a stable political system are considered the main factors for the advancement of societies and civilizations. Likewise, deviation in belief, despotic rulers, oppression, and corruption in its various forms are regarded as causes of the backwardness and decline of societies and civilizations. The study indicates that adherence to Qur’anic principles and utilization of divine laws is the key to the continuity and flourishing of societies and civilizations.
